Gene Hackman knew he wanted to be an actor from the age of 10 but some people seemed to think he was wasting his time. His classmates at the Pasadena Playhouse in California, where Hackman studied acting in his mid-20s, cruelly voted him 'Least Likely To Succeed'. Given that he shared the award that year with his lifelong friend, Dustin Hoffman, the sceptics couldn't have been more wrong. One of the finest and most versatile film actors of his generation, Hackman embodied the virtue of refusing to take the easy path in Hollywood by allowing oneself to be typecast.
