<p>Ryan Reynolds was appointed as an Officer to the Order of Canada during a ceremony in Ottawa on Tuesday, July 1, a.k.a. Canada Day in his native country</p>
<p>The actor's wife Blake Lively was on hand to support him, snapped smiling and recording as her husband was honored</p>
<p>"It was a great day, and he's immensely proud," a source tells PEOPLE, adding that Reynolds' "family was there to support him"</p>
<p>Ryan Reynolds had Blake Lively by his side as he received a special honor in his home country.</p>
<p>Reynolds, 48, was appointed as an Officer to the Order of Canada in the country's capital of Ottawa during a Canada Day ceremony on Tuesday, July 1.</p>
<p>And Lively, 37, looked as proud as ever as she recorded footage of her husband during the event with her iPhone, smiling and looking on as he received his medal.</p>
<p>"It was a great day, and he's immensely proud of the honor," a source tells PEOPLE of Reynolds. "His family was there to support him, and he's always considered Canada a third parent!"</p>

<p>In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE hours after Reynolds was named one of 88 new appointees to the Order of Canada on Dec. 19, 2024, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor said he "couldn't be more emotional and proud," adding, "I'm so grateful to be a part of the ever-evolving Canadian story."The Vancouver native went on to thank the communities across Canada who "supported and shaped me" as a person.</p>
<p>"As well as all the people across Canada who do the work of helping people each and every day without recognition or pats on the back," Reynolds continued. "I'm asking the Governor General if I can break my officer's medal into thousands of little pieces to share."</p>
<p>He also thanked the Canadian government for the honor on X (formerly Twitter), adding that he promises to "use my powers for good … and general whimsy."</p>

<p>Reynolds "co-founded initiatives to increase opportunities for under-represented groups," the government said when announcing his honor.</p>
<p>"His far-reaching philanthropy continues to strengthen communities nationwide," they added.</p>

<p>The Order of Canada is the country's highest citizenship distinction and is presented to people who "make extraordinary contributions to the nation."</p>
<p>Reynolds also previously received the Order of British Columbia and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television's humanitarian award, both in 2023.</p>
