Fairfax County Supervisor James Walkinshaw will be the Democratic nominee in the upcoming special election to replace the late Virginia Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly, district party officials announced Saturday after a party-run primary.

Walkinshaw will face Republican Stewart Whitson, who also won a party-run nominating event Saturday.

Connolly had represented Virginia's 11th district in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. for 16 years before he died of cancer in May. He endorsed Walkinshaw, who served as his chief of staff for more than a decade, shortly after he announced he wouldn't be seeking reelection.

The special election to fill Connolly's seat will be held on Sept. 9. Walkinshaw will be heavily favored as Democratic Kamala Harris won the district by 34 points in the 2024. Connolly comfortably held the seat since his first election in 2008.

Walkinshaw has served on the board of supervisors since January 2020, where he also chairs the board's legislative committee.

In his endorsement, Connelly had called appointing Walkinshaw chief of staff was "one of the best decisions I ever made."

"We need a strong representative, experienced in addressing national issues that affect our community, who can stand up to Trump and lead from day one. I believe James Walkinshaw is that leader," Connolly wrote.

Whitson is an Army veteran and former FBI agent who works in federal affairs at a conservative think tank.

Walkinshaw and a collection of allied outside groups dominated spending on advertisements for the primary, helping him stand out in the crowded field. Pro-Walkinshaw advertisers accounted for more than half of the total ad spending for the race, about $2 million, according to the ad tracking firm AdImpact.

Just one of those groups, a liberal super PAC called "Protect Progress," spent nearly $1 million on ads boosting Walkinshaw's campaign and touting his connections to Connolly.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's star-studded wedding weekend is a wrap.

The casually clad newlyweds were spotted on a boat leaving the Aman hotel in Venice on Sunday, June 29, after a final night of partying capped a three-day wedding extravaganza. She donned a wide-rimmed black hat and dark sunglasses with a sleeveless white dress, while he wore a black tee and shades, his arm around his wife's waist. The couple smiled and waved to photographers as they exited.

Bezos, 61, and Sánchez, 55, exchanged rings on Friday, June 27, on the small island of San Giorgio, across the water from Saint Mark's Square, accompanied by singing from Matteo Bocelli, son of Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, Tom Brady, Jordan's Queen Rania, Oprah Winfrey, Kris, Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Kim and Khloe Kardashian, as well as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, were among the A-listers present.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez wed: The couple tie the knot in controversial wedding ceremony

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and new wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos leave the Aman Venice hotel, in Venice, Italy, on June 29, 2025.

A bash held the day after the wedding ceremony− which wrapped up a weekend of celebrations for 200 to 250 guests, estimated to have cost $50 million in all − took place on Saturday, June 28, in the Arsenale, a former medieval shipyard in an eastern district of the lagoon city.

Celebrity guests were seen leaving the Gritti Palace hotel in central Venice wearing their interpretation of pajamas and loungewear before boarding small boats to reach the party.

Bezos and Sánchez chose a dressier look. He sported a black shirt and suit, while she wore a soft-pink off-the-shoulder dress. They kissed on the boat while greeting those around them.

About 1,000 people marched on June 28 in protest of the lavish festivities. Activists unfurled banners that read, "No space for Bezos" and "If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more tax."

At the ceremony, the bride wore a high-necked silhouette dress and a tulle and lace veil by Dolce & Gabbana, which she told Vogue was based on Sophia Loren's dress to marry Cary Grant in the 1958 film, "Houseboat."

Sánchez was also wearing a pair of diamond earrings by Dolce & Gabbana, which, according to Vogue, were lent to her in keeping with the tradition that it brings good luck for a bride to wear something borrowed.

Bezos, who is No. 4 on Forbes' global billionaires list, donned a black tuxedo and bow tie over a white shirt.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos wave to photographers as they leave the Aman Venice hotel, in Venice, Italy, on June 29, 2025.

While some residents and activists raged against Bezos as a symbol of inequality and arrogance, Venetian businesses and political leaders welcomed the luxury nuptials, hailing them as major boost for the local economy.

"Those who protest are in contradiction with the history of Venice, which is a history of relations, contacts and business," Mayor Luigi Brugnaro told Reuters.

Lauren Sánchez made this subtle change: Here's what she did after marrying Jeff Bezos

"Bezos embodies the Venetian mentality. He is more Venetian than the protesters," the mayor said. He added that he hoped Bezos, who donated 3 million euros ($3.51 million) to local institutions, would return to the city to do business.

Brugnaro said Bezos had attached no conditions to holding his wedding celebrations in Venice, and City Hall had only learned about his donations after they had already been made.

Bezos, Amazon's executive chair, got engaged to Sánchez in 2023, four years after the end of his 25-year marriage to novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

'F1' opens with $55 million, delivering Apple its biggest big-screen hit

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple has its first box-office hit.

"F1 The Movie" debuted with $55.6 million in North American theaters and $144 million globally over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday, handing the tech company easily its biggest opening yet.

Though Apple Original Films has had some notable successes in its six years in Hollywood — including the 2021 Oscar-winner "CODA" — its theatrical results have been decidedly mixed. Misfires like "Argylle" and "Fly Me to the Moon" and big-budget awards plays like Ridley Scott's "Napoleon" and Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" have been better at driving viewers to Apple TV+ than movie theaters.

But "F1" was Apple's first foray into summer blockbuster territory. It won a bidding war for the project from much of the production team behind the 2022 box-office smash "Top Gun: Maverick." Apple then partnered with Warner Bros. to distributed the film starring Brad Pitt, Damson Idris and Kerry Condon.

With a production budget over $200 million, "F1" still has several laps to go to turn a profit. But for now, "F1" is full speed ahead.

"'F1 The Movie' puts the pedal to the metal in an impressive overperformance for this original summer movie that had one of the most comprehensive and exciting marketing blitzes in recent memory and it paid off big for the film," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore.

Car racing movies have often struggled in theaters; crash-and-burn cases include Ron Howard's "Rush" (2013) and Michael Mann's "Ferrari" (2023). But "F1" built off of the Formula 1 fandom stirred up by the popular series "Formula 1: Drive to Survive." And it leaned on "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to deliver another adult-oriented action thrill ride.

Like they did in "Top Gun: Maverick," the filmmakers sought an adrenaline rush by placing IMAX cameras inside the cockpit in "F1." IMAX and large-format screens accounted for 55% of in its ticket sales. IMAX, whose screens are much sought-after in the summer, has carved out a three-week run for the movie.

Reviews have been very good for "F1" and audience reaction (an "A" via CinemaScore) was even better. That suggests "F1" could hold up well in the coming weeks despite some formidable coming competition in Universal Pictures' "Jurassic World Rebirth."

Universal's "M3gan 2.0" had been expected to pose a greater challenge to "F1." Instead, the robot doll sequel didn't come close to matching the 2022 original's box-office launch.

"M3gan 2.0" collected $10.2 million in 3,112 theaters. Memes and viral videos helped propel the first "M3gan" to a $30.4 million opening and a total haul of $180 million, all on a $12 million budget.

Still, the Blumhouse Productions horror thriller could wind up profitable. The film, written and directed by Gerald Johnstone, cost a modest $25 million to make. A spinoff titled "Soulm8te" is scheduled for release next year.

M3gan 2.0" ended up in fourth place. The box-office leader of the last two weekends, "How to Train Your Dragon," slid to second with $19.4 million. The DreamWorks Animation live-action hit from Universal Pictures has surpassed $200 million domestically in three weeks.

After a debut that marked a new low for Pixar, the studio's "Elio" gathered up $10.7 million in sales in its second weekend. That gives the Walt Disney Co. release a disappointing two-week start of $42.2 million.

Top 10 movies by domestic box office

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:

1. "F1 The Movie," $55 million.

2. "How to Train Your Dragon," $19.4 million.

3. "Elio," $10.7 million.

4. "M3gan 2.0," $10.2 million.

5. "28 Years Later," $9.7 million.

6. "Lilo & Stitch," $6.9 million.

7. "Mission: Impossible — Final Reckoning," $4.2 million.

8. "Materialists," $3 million.

9. "Ballerina," $2.1 million.

10. "Karate Kid: Legends," $1 million.

The 2025 NHL Draft was a particularly Happy occasion last night night in Los Angeles, but not just for all of the young hopeful players who got drafted onto their dream teams. Hockey's biggest event of the year became one to remember when Adam Sandler took the stage in character as none other than Happy Gilmore to announce the first-round picks for the Boston Bruins.

Sandler, 58, donned the same Bruins jersey that his character wears in the iconic '90s film Happy Gilmore, as he was introduced on stage by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Sandler instantly appeared on the massive screen behind Bettman, effortlessly slipping into character. "My name is Happy Gilmore, how are you?" he said, and was immediately met with a collective cheer from the crowd.

Cheers continued as Sandler, remaining in character, announced the Bruins' first pick of James Hagens, who played center at Boston College. Hagens was the number 7 overall pick, and Sandler— as Gilmore— made sure to congratulate him, saying, "Way to go, homie!" He then proceeded to perform his character's legendary horsey ride atop his hockey stick, leaving fans roaring with joy.

The character of Happy Gilmore is a Bruins fan largely because Adam Sandler is a Bruins fan in real life. Born in Brooklyn, New York, but raised in New Hampshire, Sandler developed an allegiance to his home team early on and drew inspiration in creating his famed move character.

Sandler's revival of the volatile and often immature, yet beloved character coincides with the upcoming release of Happy Gilmore's long-awaited sequel, Happy Gilmore 2. In the film, Sandler reprises his titular role alongside his illustrious cast mates Julie Bowen, who plays Virginia Venit, and Christopher McDonald, in the role of Gilmore's rival, Shooter McGavin. The film is headed to Netflix on July 25, 2025.
